Amanecio de Golpe - Screening

7.30pm
Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL
United Kingdom

Free Entry

The film follows the events of the night of February 4, 1992 in Caracas, Venezuela. That night a group of military rebels staged a coup d'etat. Venezuelans found themselves as virtual prisoners. As the coup starts, fighting takes place from within a military base located in the centre of the city's most affluent area, surrounded by luxury high rises and palatial mansions. The area of La Carlota provides a wealth of very interesting, often flamboyant and typical characters of the Latin America upper middle and upper classes. They are among the most affected. Various vignettes in these different characters' homes are developed. These people's reactions, lifestyles, vices, and humanity come out in a very honest fashion under duress. There are often clashes between them and the military invading the area. The media, particularly TV and radio insist everything is under control, but the residents around La Carlota see a very different reality

Synopsis

6 London Latino Film Festival 2012

A documentary offering an alternative point of view on some of the violent events that took place in Venezuela during the coup in 2002. Some local private television are accused of deliberately picking some facts in an attempt to support the ongoing coup ; different videos taken from different angles show how some people were wrongly accused of shooting at unarmed masses of demonstrators. Regardless of political preferences and actual events, it is an interesting documentary on how easily facts can be misrepresented.

10 years of the coup in Venezuela

6:30pm
Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL
United Kingdom

Free Entry

On April 11, 2002, a coup in Venezuela, organised by the oligarchy with the backing of US imperialism, removed the democratically
elected government and kidnapped the president Hugo Chavez. In less than 48 hours and despite the media manipulation, the Bolivarian masses had come out on the streets, defeated the coup and reinstated their president.

10 years later, as part of a series of events to celebrate the people's
victory against the coup, Hands Off Venezuela is hosting the London
premiere of "Cuarto Poder" (the Fourth Power) a new documentary examining the role of media, media monopoly and ownership, media manipulation and
related issues with special reference to the media coverage of events in
Venezuela.

Cast: Victor Chambi, Judith Figueroa, Emilio Galli

This first 35mm film in the Quechua language, beautifully restored, recently, by ZDF in Germany, presents a hallucinogenic mix of love story and animistic Peruvian mythology.

15 year old Kukuli lives a simple life high in the Andean mountains of Paucartambo ( a small village in Cusco, Peru). She sets off on a trip to participate in the local annual fiesta. On the way she meets Alako and they fall in love. The young couple encounter a witch, who predicts their premature death. During the fiesta Alako is killed by Ukuku, a legendary figure, half man, half bear, who also abducts Kukuli. In death, the lovers are transformed into llamas: one white and one black; and they fall in love... again...

BOLIVAR / BOLIVAR, ESE SOY YO
(This film is in Spanish, no subtitles)

Dirs. Edmundo Aray & Raiza Andrade, Venezuela, 1994, 59min, animation, colour

Simon Bolivar is one of the biggest, if not the biggest hero in Latin America: his name is on everyone's lips, today, and his life story has become a founding legend of the independent continent, used for diverse political purposes.

Venezuelan filmmakers Raiza Andrade and Edmundo Aray have tried to dispense with the clichés and look at this immense figure from slightly different perspective. Their animated "Liberator" loses some of his gravitas and, even though he's made of clay, appears much more human than he does in the history books. Absorbing and a delight to watch. "Simón Bolívar, ese Soy Yo" was the first part of Edmundo Aray's trilogy based on lives of iconic Latin American heroes, followed by "José Martí, ese Soy Yo" and "Simón Rodríguez, ese Soy Yo"

DAYS OF POWER / DIAS DE PODER

Cast: Gustavo Capacho, Paula Woyzechowsky, Theylor Plaza, Gladys Prince, Manolo Garcia Maldonado, Antonieta Colon, German Mendieta, Adriana Gavini

"Days of Power" is an uncompromising account of the life of Fernando Quintero, from his rise as a revolutionary leader against the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez, to the betrayal of his ideals and his complicity in the repression that followed his rise to power.

The death of his son Ephraim, heir of his former revolutionary convictions is the event that triggers his awakening to the false reality in which he has become subsumed . Tormented by remorse for his son's death and by the realisation of how badly he has betrayed his own people, he desires, finally, only to die. "Days of Power" is a telling parable treating of Venezuelan society of the 1960s, as it passed from dictatorship to the new oppression of "representative democracy".

THE SUGAR CANE HEDGE / ACERCADACANA
Dir. Felipe Peres Calheiros, Brazil, 2010, 20min, colour

AWARDS: Best Film Editing and Best Short Film, Brasilia Film Festival 2010.

Over decades, giant sugar and bio-fuel interests have forced 15,000 families off their land in the Pernambuco region of Brazil. This film by the independent producers 'Coletivo Asterisco' follows the struggles of Maria Francisca, one of the handful of remaining small farmers, boxed in all around by a wall of sugar cane, but still holding out against the corporations. Maria Francisca, outraged by the way her father was treated, decided to oppose the big ethanol refinery and refused to leave the house she had lived in for more than 40 years. Most of her neighbours, local people who inherited their land from their parents, have been threatened and forced away, letting their farms be destroyed in order to make more space for sugar cane plantation.

NAPOLEON'S FUNERAL
Cast: Elaine Barnard, Gwen Copeland, Lorna Montrose, Paul Tigue With the advance of the years, Adela starts to be plagued by dreams of death, peopled with surreal characters, and filled with macabre images. Fearing that her time has come, she seeks to reunite her family and to heal the rift between her and her sister that has lasted so many years. Her wish comes true and death, when it comes, has a surprise in store. After collecting several awards in Mexico for her documentary "The Creator" and short fiction piece "Mammoth", Oli Quintanilla, writer-director and Fulbright scholar, received a National Endowment for the Arts grant that funded "Napoleon's Funeral", her American Film Institute thesis project.

MAMMOTH / MAMUTH

Dir. Oli Quintanilla, Mexico, 2005, 37min, colour

Cast: Vanessa Michel, Jaime Gerner, Sabina Baksht, Silvia Mariscal, Marisa Rubio, Rodrigo Tejeda

The dramatic story of the relationship between a young mother Renata and her daughter Christine. Through flashbacks we see that Renata has a serious problem with drugs, the reason why her child was taken from her. Christine has been brought up, largely, by her paternal grandmother, who despises Renata and has influenced the child to feel the same way. Renata is haunted by memories of happy, past times she spent with her daughter, but also of all the mistakes she has made. She tries to regain contact with Christine, only to find out that she is not wanted at her 15th birthday party. Only if Renata can accept her loss and get her own life in order, will she be able to fix their relationship.

TWO TIMES ANA / DOS VECES ANA

7:30pm
Bolívar Hall

London W1T 5DL
United Kingdom

Free Entrance.

Dir. Sergio Giral, USA, 2010, 105min, colour

Cast: Elvira Valdes, Michelle Fragoso, Ivonne Lopez Arenal, Yesleer de la Cruz, Isabel Moreno, Lili Renteria

In Florida, two Ana's live in parallel realities, (or perhaps one Ana's reality is the other's illusion). The first Ana has to rise early to get to her soul-destroying, low-paid job where she will be working all day. The other Ana is moneyed and able to lead an easy life focussed on self-expression through social status. Fantasy, reality, success, and deception blend in a brilliant comic drama that bends racial and social boundaries and where nothing is as it seems. What constitutes healthy aspiration for a people used to deprivation and toil? Is it worth sacrificing the comradeship and community feeling that derives from shared hardship, just to accrue personal wealth? These are some of the deeper questions posed in the course of a deceptively simple story.

Dir. Cesar Bolivar, Venezuela, 2010, 105min, colour

Cast: Erich Wildpret,Norelys Rodriguez, Juan Manuel Laguardia, Luigi Sciamanna, Carmen Julia Alvarez, Alberto Alifa, Nohely Arteaga, Manuel Salazar, Julio Alcazar

AWARDS: 5 awards at Merida Film Festival 2010

After more than a decade without having released a feature film,Cesar Bolívar, director of some of the most successful Venezuelan movies of the 1980s, returns with a classic tale of revenge.

"Murder in High Contrast" is a political thriller-cum action film, that tells the story of Gabriel, son of leftist militants who were killed by a right-wing paramilitary squad known as Grupo Onza. Gabriel witnessed the massacre when he was a child: now, 20 years later he decides to take the law into his own hands. In his quest for justice, he is helped by a reporter, Pepe Grillo, who goes undercover in the search for information. Gabriel starts hunting down the members of the sinister organisation that killed his parents, one by one. However, in the course of his mission , he manages to fall in love... with the daughter of a man responsible for his parents' deaths!

Cesar Bolívar has cast the film from some of Venezuela's greatest stars and most talented actors, while he, himself is among the most accomplished directors the country has ever produced. His skill and commitment is put to excellent use in telling, in an accessible form, the story of contemporary Venezuelan society, which is, in part, a story of polarisation, intolerance, a corrupt underworld and an inescapable cycle of violence.

SARAGURO
Cast: Jose Gomez, Teresa Quizphe

Visually stunning drama-documentary that recreates the loves, lives, victories and defeats of the Inca people. Shot over ten weeks in the present day canton of Saraguro, the film employed a small cohesive crew working with both professional actors and local people. A compelling portrait is created of one of the oldest civilisations in the Americas. The art direction is stunning with the full vibrancy of Inca costume recreated and their ceremonial life enacted according to anthropological studies of customs that have endured, through the Spanish Conquest and down to today.

The ravishing landscapes and ancient sites used as locations are augmented with state-of-the-art 3D animation so that one feels immersed in this world that is so remote and yet so immediate and human. Not to be missed.

All she needs, now, is the love and support that only close family can provide. To her horror, she finds the house dilapidated and in a state of chaos, occupied by a crowd of siblings and cousins who quickly transform her dream into a nightmare and make her see her family and her life in a totally different light.

''The Spanish-American Workshop of Memory Women Writers' has organised a poetry evening to celebrate their first anniversary. They formed the group hoping to expand, develop personal techniques and reflect on literary feedback - including exploring new and diverse writing techniques and looking into other peoples' works, including those of immigrants.

Their meetings usually combine poetry reading, singing and guitar playing creating an atmosphere that stimulates both individual and group creativity.

In September 2011, the Palestinian Authority is urging the United Nations to recognise Palestine as a state by accepting Palestine as a full member of the UN. Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is intensifying and the question of Palestine is still unresolved. The blockade of Gaza continues, more settlements are being built in the West Bank and East Jerusalem; the Israeli army raids and demolishes Palestinian houses and makes political arrests, racism is on the increase against Palestinian citizens in Israel and many millions of Palestinians are still refugees.

The decades long Palestinian struggle for liberation challenges not only Israeli occupation and racism but also imperialist ambitions for the Middle East. Imperialism has been further threatened by recent uprisings in the region by people demanding social and economic justice. The meeting will address the current situation in Palestine, with its internal political and class divisions, within the context of continued Israel occupation, imperialist intervention and resistance.

Speakers:

Adam Hanieh: Development Studies Department, School of Oriental and African Studies

Jody McIntyre: Journalist and Political Activist

Trevor Rayne: Editorial board - Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism!

This generation was able to create a unity movement and a programme that would nationalise natural resources and the banks as well as implementing agrarian reforms to redistribute land. Today our country faces a new battle as students fight for their right to education and the Mapuches fight for autonomy and to stop the robbery of their ancient land by successive Chilean governments.

Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL
United Kingdom

Free

To mark the 400th anniversary of Spain's greatest-ever composer, Tomás Luis de Victoria (1584-1611), ILAMS joins forces with the Instituto Cervantes London to bring together the UK's foremost Victoria experts in an afternoon of talks, concluding with a round-table discussion and a short musical performance. Programme includes:

1. Noel O'Regan (University of Newcastle): A Tale of Two Cities: Victoria between Rome and Madrid

Tomás Luis de Victoria's productive life was divided fairly equally between Rome and Madrid. In Rome he was a Spaniard, a member of what was in many ways a colonial elite. In Madrid he may well have been seen as a Roman, at least in musical terms. Victoria played a crucial role as transmitter of music and musical style between the two cities. This paper will look at aspects of that transmission, particularly from a Roman perspective.

2. Owen Rees (University of Oxford): The Six-voice 'Requiem' and its Context

This paper reviews the circumstances of the composition and first performances of Victoria's six-voice Requiem, following the death of the Empress Maria in 1603. It then considers intriguing aspects of the 1605 published edition of the work, and finally it sets the music into the context of Requiem settings from the Iberian world in this period.

3. Round-table discussion

With special guest Carlos Fernández Aransay, the UK's foremost Hispanic vocal music conductor and Director of the UK's only specialist choir in Iberican repertoire, the acclaimed Coro Cervantes

Brazilian-born guitarist/singer/percussionist Celso Machado makes a long-awaited return to the UK stage to delight audiences with his mixture of infectious vocals, irresistible rhythm, and inspired lunacy.  Hailed as 'the most important Brazilian guitarist of the new generation,' his performances are unerringly thrilling, beautiful, and awe-inspiring. 'Reminiscent of Bobby McFerrin, the multi-talented Machado finds an orchestra-full of ways to use his voice and makes percussion instruments of his entire body: cheeks, mouth, chest, hands, and legs - not to mention the various parts of the microphone stand'. Simply put, Celso Machado is a force of nature. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear one of Brazil's undisputed guitar legends.

Upside-down/Inside-out:A Panel Discussion on Latin American Theatre in London

7:30pm
Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL
United Kingdom

FREE

In 1967 Argentina playwright Griselda Gambaro wrote Siamese Twins, a play which served as a premonition for the state-sponsored violence that would follow a few years later during the Dirty Wars. Throughout her work, Gambaro explores the darker side of human nature and the relationship between citizens and their governments through grotesque characters and harrowing imagery. Now, in 2011 Siamese Twins along with several other Latin American plays such as Las Brutas Juan Radrigan and Our Private Life by Pedro Miguel Rozo are premiering on London´s stages. These stories present visions of Latin America previously not seen by British audiences, offering new perspectives on their everyday and traditions. Upside-down/Inside-out brings together several key scholars and artists to discuss the relationship between Latin American politics and theatre in London. Join us as we address the ways in which artist in London develop textual and cultural translation of Latin America works and how audiences prejudices of Latin America may or may not be challenged through such stagings. This event coincides with the UK premiere of Gambaro's Siamese Twins at the Theatro Technis and tickets for the production will be raffled off at this event.

Guest Speakers: Dr. Catherine Boyle, Gael Le Cornec, Sue Dunderdale and Kate Eaton.

Gael is a French-Brazilian actress and theatre director. Born in the Brazilian Amazon, Gael worked in theatres in São Paulo and London. She studied with Zigmund Molik at the Grotowski Centre in Wroclaw

7th Thursday Exploring Venezuela: A Land of Natural Wonders in words, sounds and pictures

7:30pm
Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL
United Kingdom

FREE

In this illustrated talk, Russell  Maddicks, the author of the Bradt Guide to Venezuela will highlight some of the most fascinating areas of Venezuela to visit and what you can expect to see and do.

Drawing on his experience of adventuring in Venezuela for more than 20 years, the author will take you to:

* The "Lost World" mountain of Roraima and the unique ecosystem of its summit

* The unique thunderless lightning phenomenon in the south of Lake Maracaibo known as Catatumbo Lightning

* The magical mountain of Sorte where devotees of Maria Lionza practice a syncretic religion unique to the country

* The record-breaking and awe-inspiring waterfall of Angel Falls, known as Kerepacupai-meru to the local Pemon people.

One of the 17 most megadiverse countries in the world, Venezuela is home to Caribbean beaches, dense rainforests, high Andean valleys, mysterious table-top tepui mountains, and seasonally-flooded plains that are literally teeming with birds, beasts and creepy-crawlies.

From the anacondas, capybaras and crocodiles of Los Llanos, to the jaguars, monkeys and tarantulas of the jungle, a well-planned trip to this fascinating country can reap rich rewards for wildlife watchers.

Venezuela is also alive with the sound of folk music, from the Afro-Venezuelan tambores of the coast, to the harp-driven Joropo songs of Los Llanos and during his talk the author will present several examples of the music to be found in the regions he discusses.

There will be a live group performing traditional folk music, an opportunity to sample some of Venezuela's excellent local rum and Gillian Howe of Geodyssey - a tailor-made travel company specializing in organized trips to Venezuela - will be on hand to offer her own expert tips and advice on travelling in Venezuela.

The book presentation by Russell Maddicks on toursim will be followed by a lively reception on Venezuelan music and food.

London W1T 5DL

In 1856, a whaler arrives in Paita, Peru; on board is Herman Melville, who is astonished to learn that Manuela Sáenz, for eight years the lover of Simón Bolívar, is still alive. He calls on her, and although she will not talk to him about her life, his visit sends her to her chest of Bolívar's letters. As she reads them, the sepia-toned present gives way to flashbacks in color: she meets 'the Liberator' in 1822, becomes his lover, and also becomes a colonel in his military movement to realize the 'Gran Colombia', one nation across South America. As plague (brought by the ship) closes in on Manuela's household, so does her tempestuous story move toward Bolívar's betrayal and death

Bacalao Men was born in 1999 when Pablo Estacio invited a few of his musician friends to form a songo band, but not just any songo band! This group is filled with legendary musicians from the best of the best of the Caracas music scene.

Sabaneando, is Bacalao Man's most recent production.  With a solid live scene and a huge following in Venezuela, the group have gone on to play live internationally with gigs in Ecuador and India. Sabaneando's tunes are not just a collection of party and tropical sounds.  This album promises of a new exploration of Afro-Latin flavour, mixed, cut, and peppered with mad Caribbean sounds and textured with electronic rythms.  Gustavo Guerrero on the guitar is reminiscent of Arsenio Rodriguez and Pete Townshend. On this new album you can also hear the powerful duo of the sax and trombone whose melodies will transport you to a world of salsa in the seventies.

One of the finest young performers of the Cuban Classical guitar school, Ahmed is virtuoso and an ambassador of Cuban culture.  For almost a decade Ahmed had the privilege of working closely with the late Cuban guitar composer José Antonio (Ñico) Rojas.  Over this period Ahmed single-handedly transcribed, learned and performed most of the old master's unpublished works, bringing Rojas cultural legacy to future generations. He will perform some Cuban boleros and 'filin' themes

Radio Bemba Rebellion plus April, Coup for Black Hold & An Embassy Under Siege

Rebelion Radio Bemba
(25.31') [Radio Bemba Rebellion - grassroots communications against the 2002 coup in Venezuela] - [2007] David Segarra -
During the coup of 2002, public media and television broadcasting were closed, while private broadcasters supported the coup. During these days of violence, the population only received reliable and independent information through community and alternative media, who took to the streets with their modest equipment to find the information suppressed by the corporate media. This documentary Rebelion Radio Bemba ["word of mouth"] shows how the population communicated through mobile phones, internet, graffiti, movilizing in scooters and spontaneously organising mass rallies around the presidential palace to restore President Hugo Chavez to office.

Abril, golpe por el oro negro
(18.26') [April, coup for black gold] - [2010] VTV -
This documentary shows the real reasons behind the coup against President Chavez in April 2002. It examines the strategic importance of Venezuelan oil and shows that the coup had nothing to do with freedom of expression and democracy but everything to do with the US control over Venezuela's oil.

Embassy Under Siege: "Asedio a una embajada"
- This documents events surrounding the April 2002 coup in Venezuela. It focuses on the five days immediately before and during Chávez's removal, when a group of opposition thugs besieged the Cuban Embassy, even cutting off supplies of water and power, while the local Caracas police just stood by. The films shows them vandalizing vehicles and preventing the entry or exit of embassy officials. The documentary shows prominent Cuban exiles leading the siege, where they cut off water and electricity services - yet it thanks to the amazing bravery of the Cuban embassy staff that they did not enter the embassy with the untold consequences that would have brought.

This talk reflects on the Bicentenary of the outbreak of the movement for independence by Spain's American colonies. 10 years since the 2nd Intifada uprising: making the empire turn back

6.00pm
Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL

Free

This is the second of five events in the '10 years since the 3nd Intifada uprising' series, following on from the hugely successful event in October: 'Internationalism and Solidarity with Palestine: we are not liberating Palestine, Palestine is liberating us'.

This time the panel will be exploring the reasons for the eruption of the Intifada and its ramifications for the Palestinian revolution and national liberation struggle. Arguably, the Palestinian revolution is at the forefront of the world struggle against white supremacist neo-colonialism and settler-colonialism. It is largely in this context that the speakers will explore the impact of the Intifada on the politicization of young people across the world and its impact on regional and international politics.

The meeting will discuss how the Intifada has been a catalyst, and formed part of the process of an emerging multi-polar world and the growing strength and confidence of the South.

Finally, this meeting seeks to explore the Intifada's relationship with movements of resistance against Anglo-American aggression, invasion and occupation in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas and conflicts in the 'war on terror'

Speakers:

Leila Khaled

George Galloway

Massoud Shedrajeh - IHRC

A message will be delivered on behalf of the Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada

Dir. Enrique Pineda Barnet, Cuba, 2009, 97min, colour

Cast: Veronica Lynn, Broselianda Hernandez, Hector Noa, Ismael de Diego, Roberto Diaz

Pineda Barnet is the multiple award-winning director of La Bella del Alhambra, (Oscar nominated, and one of the most important Cuban films of recent years). His latest feature, set in Havana , is an overwhelmingly powerful evocation of a Cuban family's tumultuous history, centring around the reading of a will by widowed, spiritualist matriarch Amalia. It is a brilliant and visceral cinematic study of inter-generational turmoil as the family members fall victim to the tyranny of memory, tortured by the turmoil which marked their past lives.

Dir. Rebeca Chavez, Cuba, 2009, 100min, colour

Cast: Rafael Ernesto Hernandez, Eman, Xor Ona, Yori Gomez, Carlos Enrique Almirante, Mario Guerra

Beautifully filmed, "City in Red" perfectly evokes the look and atmosphere of Cuba in the late 1950's and, especially, the fight for freedom by the people of Santiago de Cuba and the price they had to pay for victory. Springing crisply from the pages of Jose Soler Puig's novel "Bertillón 166", the film explores the cost in young lives and the permanent psychological and emotional scars left on ordinary people who are forced to take up arms. It eloquently explores the struggle to return to equanimity and a sense of self- worth after one has stepped over the line to become a killer; a struggle that many Cubans live with to this day. A highlight of the Festival.

7.30pm
Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL

Tickets: £5 Donation

Dir. Humberto Saco, Peru, 2009, 50 mins, colour In Requecho. A thousand years later, Humberto Saco tells us the story of Los Uros, the pre-Inca people who for centuries have been living on the floating islands over lake Titicaca between Peru and Bolivia and who are almost about to disappear. María is a centenary woman and the oldest settler of the community, who lives isolated from the coast and surrounded by the cold waters of the lake and flourishing landscape of totora reeds. She represents the part of the Uros that refuses contact with outsiders and prefers living with the customs of its ancient heritage. On the other hand Maria's relatives have become part of those who have settled closer to the coast, established contact with the tourists and generally are more comfortable adapting to the outside world. Both are engaged in a bitter fight against the Peruvian State which doesn't recognize them as owners of their land. The sound of the oar moving the water blends with the impressive images of the landscape and the bright colours of the Uros' fabrics and crafts. The portrayal of religious syncretism and people's spiritual relationship with nature brings up the issue of identity and the importance of its preservation.

He does not know why they are travelling: she, perhaps, does: but it proves to be as much a passage through time as through space, a journey briging to mind the memory of Chile's recent past.

5th Tuesday Villamagua

7.30pm opening Tuesday 5th, Friday 8th, 10am to 4pm Bolívar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London W1T 5DL

Villamagua was born in Loja, Ecuador, in 1947, and studied painting and sculpture at the Escuela de Bellas Artes, Cuenca (College of Fine Arts). Since then he has been painting for four decades, and his artistic creations have a unique and unmistakable style, which places him among the most influential Ecuadorian painters. Few artists can master the combination of colours and light. This combination is silence, shouting and rebelliousness, charm and attraction, that penetrates and startles; it is joy that arises and remains in the soul, unveiling in this way the master and eternal disciple of perfection. Villamagua lives in the garden of his utopian and imaginary world, a place where joyous song can be heard when the dawn breaks. Villamagua has taken part in international exhibitions in China (Shanghai, Beijing), Poland, and now in the United Kingdom.

11th Monday Latin America: 500 years of resistance

Mon 11th 7:30pm Bolívar Hall 54 Grafton Way London W1T 5DL United Kingdom Free

Latin America today is at the forefront of the struggle against economic and political domination in the globalised world. The struggle has never ceased. During the past 518 years the indigenous peoples of the continent have been fighting for their land and their cultural identity. Recently, the first ever indigenous President was elected in Bolivia, a country that achieved independence and was named after its liberator, Simon Bolivar, who, nearly 200 years ago, envisioned a united continent free from foreign domination. This event will celebrate the spirit of resistance of its indigenous people, as represented by the current struggle of the Mapuche in Chile, and the legacy of the ideas of Bolivar for the 21st century.

While placing great emphasis on the music of the tango (featuring composers such as Piazzolla, Gardel or Villoldo), the piano recital "Beyond Tango" also presents classical music by composers from Argentina and from Latin America in general. It will include the British premiere of the piece "Paisaje en Fluctuación" by Luis Zubillaga, whose son Luciano is an acknowledged filmmaker living in London. Besides, the guarania "Ciudad imantada" by the Paraguayan Mauricio Cardozo Ocampo, a piece dedicated to the city of Buenos Aires, underlining the friendship between the two countries. In addition, the programme includes works by Juan María Solare himself. The figure of the pianist and composer as an inseparable unit -as a centaur- has a long tradition both in classical and popular music, from Franz Liszt to Bill Evans. The Argentinian composer and pianist Juan María Solare (Buenos Aires, 1966) has lived in Germany since 1993 This recital is also the official British launch of the recent CD "Tango Monologues" by Juan María Solare: almost 80 minutes of music, 20 titles, and a 28-page, full-colour booklet in three languages (Spanish, German and English). BUSKER FROM THE LONDON TUBE

Busking is a British term used in many areas of the English-speaking world. The place where a busker performs is called their pitch. People busk for a variety of reasons: for money, for fun, for attention, to meet people and socialize, for the love of their art, to practise their skills, or try out new material in front of an audience. A busker's income depends on many conditions including, the type and quality of the performance, the composition of the audience, the weather, the location and the time of day.

Presents: CHEBETO REQUENA

He owes his cultural patrimony to Venezuela, as defined by the Institute of Cultural Patrimony ( IPC ). He is a highly respected clarinet soloist and has been interviewed by specialist music magazines.  He is a member of the Underground Busking Scheme in London.

Eugenio Montejo (1938-2008) is arguably the most significant poetic voice to emerge not just from Venezuela but from Latin America in general in the latter half of the twentieth century. Dr Nicholas Roberts, lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Durham University and whose recently-published Poetry and Loss constitutes the first book-length study in English on Montejo's work, presents a talk on the poetic world of this seminal poet, looking at the ways in which Montejo tackles a sense of personal and national loss in twentieth-century Venezuela: a proud inheritor of traditions, yet aware of the need for renewal, it is poetry that he identifies as the space where hope is to be found.

The Mapuche people defeated the Spanish invaders in the 15 century. Nowadays, their struggle is focused on maintaining their identity and stopping the encroachment of multinational corporations in Mapuche ancestral territory. The Mapuche people live in 6% of their original land; they have been forced to live in poverty and many had to migrate from their land. The Chilean state answers their demands using the anti-terrorist legislation of the Pinochet regime; the Mapuche people experience systematic repression from the police, and as a result there have been several unlawful killings; Mapuches have been imprisoned and their property vandalized

16th Wednesday Salón al Callejón - Drawing Room to Communal Alley: The criollisation of the Peruvian Vals, by David Mortara. Followed by a concert of Peruvian Valses, performed by Malambo

Wed 16th June, 7:30pm

Bolivar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London, W1T 5DL

Free

In Peru's capital Lima throughout colonial times, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries, music and dance traditions imported from Europe and considered high fashion among the city's elite would migrate and become popular among the masses, symbolised as a move from salón (drawing room) to callejón (communal alley). The European Waltz was embraced and adapted by Lima's middle and lower classes, assuming a local aesthetic distinct from its forebear - following a process of criollisation, to become embedded in popular tradition as the Peruvian Vals and having its own repertory of songs. Conducting a 30-minute presentation, illustrated with projected photos and graphic illustrations, the speaker will discuss this process, interspersed with examples of live music and audience participation highlighting stylistic changes that have taken place. Following a 20-minute intermission, during which Pisco Sour - the "national cocktail of Peru" - will be served, there will be a 40-minute concert programme consisting of classic Peruvian Valses performed by the group Malambo.

Programme
Presentation:
What does criollisation mean?
When and how did the waltz travel from Europe to Peru?
Elite to plebiscite: How the waltz crossed the social divide.
Waltz to Vals: Examples of stylistic adaptation.
Performance, consisting of the following Peruvian valses:
Nube Gris
Callejón De Un Solo Caño

Bolivar Hall
54 Grafton Way
London, W1T 5DL

Tickets at the doors

There is much to learn about Venezuela and the process of progressive transformation it is undergoing. No other genre can convey this reality better than the documentary. Since just before the election of Hugo Chavez as President of Venezuela in 1998, a large number of documentaries have captured the rich and multifaceted nature of the Bolivarian process in which the poor, women, workers, peasants, students, youth, the mass driving force of progressive change in this simultaneously oil-rich but poverty-stricken nation, are shown taking their destiny in their own hands. The VENEZUELA IN DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL is a small but representative sample of the growing documentary interest that the Bolivarian process has awoken. Bolívar Hall

Tickets: £3 on the door

Zamora, land and free men
Spanish with English Subtitles

This is the latest film by Román Chalbaud, and it explores the life of Ezequiel Zamora, one of the protagonists of the most violent period in the history of Venezuela. The Venezuela in which Zamora lived and died was a country decimated by the War of Independence, dismembered into enormous fiefdoms in the hands of the large landowners who emerged from the war with their pockets bulging, betraying, along the way, the people and the leaders who gave their lives to liberate the country from Spanish oppression. In Zamora the leading roles are played by Alexander Solórzano, Daniela Alvarado, Dilia Waikkarán, Eric Ekvall, Luigi Sciamana, Julio César Mármol, Alberto Galíndez, Antonio Cuevas, Asdrúbal Meléndez, Dimas González, Eduardo Gadea Pérez, Antonio Delli, Anastasia Mazzone and Ramón Hinojosa. The script is by the veteran Venezuelan writer Luis Britto García.

The film is a La Fundación Villa del Cine production. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX8uVK9mvSM&feature=player_embedded

Commando X
Spanish with English Subtitles

The film relates the exploits of Manuel, a character who owes a lot to the Spanish picaresque tradition. Poor, without a penny to his name, Manuel pretends to be the exact opposite in order to win the heart of Lucía, his boss' stunning-looking daughter. However, things get complicated for Manuel when he gets involved with a radical group of commandos who want to overthrow the President. Manuel suddenly finds himself having to choose between saving his love or saving the city from terror. This political comedy is directed by José Luis Varela, with the script by Henry Herrera.

Postcards from Leningrad
Spanish with English Subtitles

For the young narrator of Postcards from Leningrad, being born into a socialist uprising in 1960s Venezuela wasn't easy. She and her cousin Teo have learned how to live a clandestine life, making an ongoing game out of survival, with everything from code names and creative disguises to making themselves invisible and devising fantastic escape plans. A visual collage with playful animation and nostalgic footage of revolutionary youth, the film injects both humour and pathos into a story where wild fantasies, foggy memories, madness, white lies, and grief all mix seamlessly in a child's reality. Nominated by Venezuela for the 2008 Oscars and for Spain's 2008 Goyas.

Blocks
Spanish with English Subtitles

The film is directed jointly by Alfredo Hueck and Carlos Caridad, each of whom covers stories from their own apartment block, turning them into half a film. The result is a cinematographic diptych, made up of two half-length films. Blocks is really two films in one, with some points, themes and dramas in common. The first story, from the first block, called "The final faliure", is directed by Alfredo Hueck and written by Julio Balam. It tells a loves story with sombre overtones of Bukovsky. The other, second block, (*Getting across the barrier"), written by Marcel González Ávila and directed by Caridad, is a story of family disintegration, triggered by an act of corruption.

This talk will examine how the bicentennial celebrations of independence can be used to revise traditional understandings of the process of Venezuela's separation from the Spanish imperial system. In particular it will examine the ways that Great Britain was involved in Venezuelan independence (1810-1830) and how this involvement has been remembered and commemorated in the two countries. The talk will consider what relevance this shared history might have to contemporary Venezuelan-British relations. How did Europe lose world supremacy so dramatically in the twentieth century and later manage to recover it? Why is Europe so attractive for immigrants from all over the world? How has the European Union managed to become the largest economy in the world despite the fact that several of its member states are in decline? Why is knowledge of Europe so useful for emerging economies, and particularly for Latin America in the twenty-first century? These are some of the major questions that will be addressed in this lecture which aims at being both informative and entertaining and explain the essence of Europe primarily to a Latin Americans and a non-European audience.

The Venezuelan Government has transformed the lives of millions through progressive policies in the last decade. Today, this progress is under threat from the US militarization of the region that is encircling the country, including an agreement between the US & Colombia concerning new military bases & the revival of the 4th fleet. April marks the 8th anniversary of the temporarily successful coup against Chávez. The recent coup in Honduras, followed by the exposure of coup plots in Ecuador & Paraguay, has confirmed that right-wing forces are again seeking to roll back progress across Latin America, threatening peace, democracy & sovereignty. International support is essential - this event is a great opportunity to learn more about developments & how we can build solidarity.

You can register online here! Registration is only £5/£4 (concessions) for the day. 8th Tuesday Sergio De Oliveira launches SEM ESPERA,his flute oeuvre with the TRIO RONÁI

7:30 pm Bolivar Hall, 54 Grafton Way, London, W1T 5 DL

Please contact: graca@brazil.org.uk

The Embassy of Brazil in London and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have invited Sergio Roberto de Oliveira to launch SEM ESPERA at the Bolivar Hall in London with the same ensemble of flautists that played his pieces at the premiere in Rio de Janeiro and Amsterdam- the RÓNAI TRIO  - Maria Carolina Cavalcanti, Rudi Garrido and Ana Paula Cruz. SEM ESPERA was commissioned by Laura Rónai as an educational piece for a course she would be teaching in Tocantins. Sergio Roberto de Oliveira will be commenting on his compositions during the concert.

TRIO RÓNAI was created in 2003 under the supervision of Professor Dr. Laura Rónai at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), where the trio members were trained. The trio aims at presenting works composed exclusively for the transverse flute.  Its repertoire features Brazilian works of any age or style. A distinguishing feature of the ensemble is the direct contact that it maintains with composers, a very useful association which has already yielded various dedications from composers. TRIO RÓNAI has recorded various composers and introduced others, such as for instance Ivan Paparguerius  (Trio Breve no 1), a recording presented in the series 'Music and Musicians from Brazil' broadcast by the Radio MEC FM (Ministry of Education and Culture Radio).

9th Wednesday Revolutionary honour, truth, and justice: Creating a modern legal system in Venezuela (and Latin America) after independence, 1820-50

7:30 pm Bolivar Hall, 54 Grafton Way, London W1T 5 DL

Free

One of the greatest challenges facing any country that attempts to become "developed" is to establish a legal system that meets modern standards of justice, which often contradict traditional notions of justice. When Venezuela became independent in 1821, its leaders embarked upon an extremely ambitious path, to transform the former colony into a modern, liberal republic. Professor Zahler will explore the enormous challenges facing this transformation during the first 30 years of independence, and also some of the remarkable successes in the young republic's effort to achieve a modern legal system. These efforts required not only administrative and structural changes, but also changes in the morals, ethics, and values that underlay people's fundamental notions of justice. Looking beyond Venezuela, the talk will consider similar efforts throughout Latin America, and will explore why notions such as equality, individual rights, and democracy can be so problematic and dangerous.

Professor Zahler received his PhD in Latin American history from the University of Chicago in 2005.  Zahler has studied Latin America, during both the colonial and post-independence periods. His work concerns Latin America's evolving political and legal culture throughout the nineteenth century, as the region changed from colonies to independent, liberal republics.

"I am here, I am from there" is a community project that aims to create a social meeting place through art.
Objectives

The purpose of our project is to promote the integration of people through the art of drama classes, and, by writing a simple script that will have the central theme of Latin Americans and Immigration, to create a platform through which people can interact and express their dramatic talent and share their experiences of being an immigrant in the UK with the Spanish speaking community, and anyone interested in our theme and culture.

Organized by Tierra Theatre Group
Tierra Theatre Group was set up in August 2007 as a voluntary organization to promote and develop through drama, music and theatre activities, awareness of the importance of the cultural and social integration of Latin Americans and Spanish speaking residents in the U.K. within their own community and with other communities in the U.K.  Our main aim is to encourage the ongoing exchange of ideas and informal education through drama and music workshops, where through artistic expression we will generate a space of aesthetic enjoyment, reflection, learning processes and hopefully of personal development.

This project is funded by "National Lottery" and supported by:"I am here, I am from there" is a community project that aims to create a social meeting place through art. 18th Friday 8th International Symposium Against Isolation

7:30pm
18 December: opening
19 December: Workshops and conference From 10:00 am Bolivar Hall, 54 Grafton Way, London W1T 5 DL

Free

Every year since 2002, the International Platform against Isolation has held this Symposium, each time in a different European city. The original impetus came from the opposition to the state in Turkey's use of solitary confinement in cells and prisons against its political opponents. But this practice was not confined to Turkey. Indeed, it reflects a global reality.

Entire countries can be isolated through sanctions or threats of invasion, sometimes carried out, as in Iraq and Afghanistan. Organisations can be proscribed as "terrorist", which in part aims at isolating them. And even individuals can be isolated, with or without actual imprisonment. However, where there is oppression there is and must be resistance. The International Symposium is part of this. By bringing together a diverse range of opinion from different countries, united by being, in their different ways, critics of the system, the Symposium is itself a step towards overcoming isolation.

This is the International Symposium's call to participate in this year's London event. We hope you will be able to participate, and look forward to hearing from you. For a complete program and activities, please follow this link: http://www.ipai-isolation.info

Populism is dead! Long live populism! The emergence of Hugo Chávez as president of Venezuela in 1998 has revived analysis of one of Latin America’s most enduring political traditions. Yet by then Latin America had changed radically since the heyday of Perón and Evita.

This book examines the phenomenon that is Hugo Chávez within these contexts, assessing to what extent his government fits into established ideas on populism - and democracy - in Latin America.
